2012 Nantucket Memorial Day Ceremony

Memorial Day 2015

Flags being carried at the 2012 Nantucket Memorial Day CeremonyThe Memorial Day ceremony always tugs at my heart strings. I remember as a child participating in the parade in my Girl Scout uniform, my brothers in their Boy Scout Uniforms. I carried Lilacs and the boys held flags. My father, who is no longer with us, was a veteran of WWII having served in the Philippines.

It truly pleases me to see the tradition carried on.

The parade with Scouts, old soldiers and the Scottish Highland Pipe Band started at the American Legion Hall on Washington Street; it winds its way through the streets of town past all the lovely antique homes draped with buntings and flying flags, ending at our beautiful Prospect Hill Cemetery. As it should be, a heartfelt ceremony was held honoring those who proudly served their country.
